One pint of blood could save three people’s lives. Donating blood may seem scary or nerve-wracking, but knowing that the blood is saving people’s lives can help take the edge off it.

The Red Cross blood drive took place on February 28th, and it was a phenomenal turnout, with 56 people donating 39 pints of blood. This event takes place every year and is hosted by Leo’s Club.

Donating blood doesn’t just have to be through Upper Perk; anyone can donate anytime through the Red Cross. All information can be found on their website, redcrossblood.org, but here is some general information regarding our blood drive: There is a minimum weight requirement based upon height and gender. Anyone 16 or older can participate, and anyone 17 or older does not need a permission slip to donate.

Any time one gives blood, it is extremely important to stay well-hydrated and satiated, starting from the day before and leading up to the time of the donation.

Leo’s club advisor, Mrs. Hawthorne, told the WSJ, “We can’t stress enough how important it truly is to fuel your body.” She said that “Reactions are only typically happening to people who didn’t eat enough before.” While these reactions are minor, including anxiety attacks, nausea, and dizziness, the lack of any reaction would be ideal.

Although donating may seem scary, 30% of all blood donated comes from high school students. You really can make a difference. For anyone considering donating blood next year, just know that a single pint of blood could potentially save up to three people’s lives.
