Here at UPHS, homecoming, winter formal, pep rallies, and spirit weeks contribute to the school spirit among students. Unbeknownst to some, the Student Council club runs multiple events here at school. They continuously have worked hard
throughout the years, making all of the events students tend to look forward to happen.
The biggest event this club organizes is homecoming. The Student Council arranges a reputable homecoming dance paired with dancing, food, and music each year. The club members spend hours each year before the dance decorating the halls and gym for an exciting taste of the year’s theme. They pick the songs the king and queen dance to, including the student’s first song after they dance, along with the closing song at the end of the night.
The council has established a point system where each member receives points for coming to meetings, set-up for events, and extra points for non-mandatory things. For example, students can receive extra points for creating posters for events, coming to set-ups, or bringing in items needed for events such as candy bags. As a reward for their points, members receive free tickets to homecoming and prizes. However, students don’t need to earn points.
President of the Student Council Ruth Padilla, states that the club is “trying to create a more upbeat council to really make school events and activities more enjoyable for the students.” The members have become more involved this year due to their motivated council. They have grown in size over the years because of their role in events and promotion of the club during club fairs.
This year, the Student Council had a role in the senior picnic tables situated in the courtyard. Additionally, the club is expecting to plan some new upcoming events such as a holiday sing-a-long. But famously, the most popular events they orchestrate are homecoming, the costume contest, and candy grams.
Student Council is one of many clubs UPHS offers here at the high school, and the WSJ believes it is important to give spotlights to the clubs that make this school the community it is.
