This year’s outstanding students have recently been chosen for the National Honors Society. Since this is a large achievement for these students, NHS hosts a celebration of their accomplishments.
The National Honors Society is an organization for gifted and community-leading students. According to the National Honor Society’s official website “The NHS program empowers and equips your students with the knowledge and skills to be transformative leaders in your school, community, and beyond.”
Upper Perk held a ceremony to induct students into the NHS. The ceremony was held on November 20th in the school’s auditorium. Guest speakers included the superintendent, principal, school board members, and an elected faculty speaker, Mr. Nomland.
Officers are also elected within the NHS each year. The leaders this year are President Autumn Alderfer, Vice President Gabby Lash, Secretary Julianna Wert, and Treasurer Abby Packard.
Becoming a National Honors Society member is an achievement to only a select few, as students must meet certain criteria to be accepted. The requirements include at least a 3.5 GPA and being recommended by 8 different teachers. Students must also have scholarship, character, leadership, and service skills to be accepted into the NHS. Teachers use a rubric to evaluate any student applying to NHS which uses a 1-4 score scale for each category.
Upcoming students curious about what to expect when applying for the NHS can find more information at www.upsd.org under the school clubs page.
