Arts Week in the Upper Perkiomen School District gives students a chance to display their artwork created in the various creative and performing arts classes. Throughout the year, art teachers pulled pieces they deemed particularly remarkable from the classes and set them to be displayed during the week.
The event runs from Monday, May 5th, through Friday, May 9th, with the first three days being devoted to art from the middle and elementary schools. Thursday and Friday of that week, however, are dedicated to the art of Upper Perkiomen High Schoolers, including the awards given to student artists that their teachers consider “outstanding.”
Traditionally, during the Arts Week at Upper Perk, students with artwork on display have the chance to win an award for their work. These awards are given to students during the arts show on Thursday, May 8th at 6:30 pm.
Mr. Moyer, the department chair of the Creative and Performing Arts at Upper Perkiomen High School, organizes the event. In an interview, he told the WSJ that the awards are divided into categories based on the type of artwork, including “sculptures, black and white, painting, and colored drawing.” The X-Lab creations also have two different awards: design and engineering.
Teachers chose first, second, and third-place winners for each category during the school day on Tuesday, April 28th. Specific works were pulled from classes and placed in the auditorium for faculty to view and vote on. By the end of the day, the winners for each category were chosen.
During the Thursday of Arts Week, the awards and rewards are given out to the winners. Mr. Moyer stated, “Univest bank sponsors $1,000 a year for the rewards [given to the winners].” With this money, third-place winners were given $25, second-place winners $50, and first-place winners $75.
Winners included Asher Zonis for first place in black-and-white drawing and Brandon Schuler for third place in photography.
While the 2025 Arts Week is over, students at UPHS can look forward to their hard work in arts classes being recognized next year.
