Girls’ flag football is an exciting and rapidly growing sport that encourages teamwork, strategy, and athleticism. Unlike traditional tackle football, flag football allows players to showcase their skills in a safer environment, limiting the contact aspect.
While boys have always played it, recently it has become mainstream as a girls’ sport. Girls’ flag football promotes physical fitness and empowers young girls by cultivating confidence and leadership on the field.
With increasing participation at schools, girls’ flag football is breaking barriers and providing more opportunities for young athletes to shine and compete. Upper Perk decided to hop on the trend and now has their club, coached by Ms. Cascioli and assistant coach, 5th grade teacher Mr. Langenback.
A team of 27 has already kicked off their season and had two practices. The girls practice every Monday and Thursday on the back turf. Brielle White tells the WSJ, “The practices have been really fun.” First-year player Katie Proctor adds, “I loved powder puff, so I thought I’d give girls’ flag football a try.”
Although flag football is not yet an official team sport, our athletic director, Bobby Kurzwig, and Ms. Cascioli are working to make it official in the PIAA within the next two years. We are excited to see the girls showcase their skills this season!
