As the school year slowly approaches the end and the weather starts to get warmer, there is only one thing this could mean: Track is back! New records have been broken, and old ones are soon to be. Upper Perkiomen’s high school Track team is off to a statistically amazing start this season, with one player in particular making Track history.
Track officially took off this March, and they’ve started strong with help from Coach Mowrer, Coach Dusza, and the 50-60 participants on the team. “Track has only had one meet so far,” according to senior Micah Keller, a member on the track team, “But there are a lot of new athletes this year, and I think we’ll be pretty good.”
A model of the track season thus far is a senior athlete and soon to be a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Micah Keller. He is one of Upper Perkiomen’s most competitive track and field shot put throwers; this is Micah’s second year on the team, and he has already qualified for District One and PIAA Class 3A championship.
Last year, Micah started the season planning to race in the 100m, but sooner than later, he came to realize that it wasn’t for him and decided to check out shot put, and he quickly started to peak. Micah expressed how at nearly every meet, he was hitting a new PR and breaking his own records. He even “ended the season off at states and placed second out of three throwers.”
Upper Perk wanted to give more appreciation and recognition for Micah’s accomplishments. Mr. Kurzwig, the Upper Perkiomen High School’s athletic director, presented Micah with a specialized wheelchair just for him. “It’s a welded chair with straps for my waist, knees, and feet, which help me stay in the chair while I throw. There is a metal pole on the front of the chair that I hold on to so that when I throw, I can pull on it to get momentum to throw further.”
This gift has done nothing but benefit Micah and help to further improve his talent. “This year is starting off better for me because I have the right type of throwing chair now.”
As the season comes to an end, the Upper Perkiomen Track & Field team continues to grow. Be sure to come out on April 30th and watch the team show off their skills.
